The Five Senses

The purpose of this exercise is to get you engaged with the practice of observation. Life speeds by so quickly most of the time that we do not have or take the time to just sit quietly and pay attention to the world around us.

Sit wherever you choose, in public or soewhere private, and set a timer for 5 minutes. Close your eyes and pay attention to your senses. What do you feel? Can you feel your clothes against your skin? a breeze blowing? the hardness of the chair or bench you are sitting on? What do you smell? Something pleasant, I hope! What do you taste? Leftover flavors from lunch, gum, mints?  What do you hear? People talking, loud or soft noises, music, the hum of the fan? After the 5 minutes, open your eyes and look around you. What do you see? Describe people, objects, nature. What has this experience been like for you? Was it hard to stay focused on your senses? Did you discover anything about yourself or the world around you? What does it mean?
